BCCM™/LMBP: New director appointed

Prof. Dr. ir. Walter Fiers retired on October 1, 1996. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his major contribution to the BCCM™/LMBP Plasmid collection, which was originally conceived and founded as a result of the scientific activities of his research group.

Equally, we welcome Prof. Dr. ir. Roland Contreras as the new director. Prof. Contreras is a specialist in heterologous gene expression in lower eukaryotes. He started his career in 1969 as assistant researcher in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Gent (RUG), where he became research director for the National Fund for Scientific Research (Belgium), in 1987. As well as being responsible for the Plasmid collection, he is currently the chairman of the department of molecular biology, supervising its day-to-day activities and lecturing on molecular biology, molecular biochemistry and post-translational modifications of proteins.
