  • Antarctic campaign
  • Begin date: Sept 2003– end date: Oct 2003
  • Polar zone: Ross Island
  • Title: Aurora Australis V1 cruise
  • Summary: This cruise is part of the SIBClim project. In this collaborative work with the Australian glaciologists from ACE (Drs. Ian Allison, Vicky Lytle, Rob Massom, Tony Worby) we took the opportunity of the Aurora Australis V1 cruise (Australian Antarctic Division) dedicated to sea ice remote sensing validation (Antarctic Remote Ice Sensing Validation - ARISE) to collect sea ice cores and perform in-situ measurements and experiments (i.e. incubations). Eight stations were investigated, with a total of 96 ice cores recovered (65 meters of cores) and 120 brine holes drilled. Some 560 liters of sea water and 180 liters of brines were collected and processed on board. About 20 CO2 flux measurements were performed above snow, ice and brine holes and a total of 40 CO2 “spike” measurements taken along depth profiles in the sea ice cover. Further analyses are now performed in Brussels. Media considered are snow, ice, brines (at two different levels), sea water. Variables measured are: temperatures, bulk salinity, textures, δ18O, total gas content, gas composition (O2, N2, CO2 ,DMS), Iron (total-dissolved-particulate-stable isotopes), Nutrients, Chla, Pigments, Bacterial counting, Algae speciation, Bacterial and algal viability, pH, Alkalinity, pCO2 direct, pO2
