ASPI: Antarctic Subglacial Processes and Interactions: influence
of transition zones on ice sheet stability

Short
description of the core IPY project:
SALE-UNITED -
A band of international scientists and technologists from 8 countries
have joined together to explore one of earth’s final frontiers.
A continent-wide approach to exploration will redefine how Antarctica
is viewed. The program will also provide clues to the distant
past of Antarctica and the onset of glaciation. The most intriguing
questions relate to who lives in these environments and how do
they make a living. The presence of microbial ecosystems is almost
assured and how they have survived at the edge of life will provide
clues to where we might find life elsewhere in the solar system
