Belgian Antarctic research programme

Phase VI The sixth phase of the Antarctic research programme (2006-2010) is included in the Programme “Science for a Sustainable Development (SSD)”. This umbrella programme groups different research sections: energy, transport, agro food, health, climate, biodiversity, terrestrial and marine ecosystems; positioning as such Antarctic research and the role of Antarctica within the global environmental system. The major Antarctica research themes remain climate change and biodiversity. The total research budget for the Antarctica part amounts to 5 MEURO.
Phase V The fifth phase of the Antarctic research (2000-2005) was included in the Second Scientific Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSD II), in order to group the programmes Antarctica, North Sea, Biodiversity and Atmosphere and Climate Change within a coordination structure entitled "Global Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity". The total research budget amounted to 6 MEURO.
Phase IV
The fourth Phase of the Programme (1997-2000) was launched under the Scientific Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSD I). The overall budget of the phase amount to 235 MBEF (about 6 MEURO).
In addition Belgium contributed a sumed of 20 MBEF (about 0.5 MEURO) to the operational costs of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA).
Phase III The implementation of the third phase of the Research Programme on the Antarctic was approved on June 1992, for a total budget of 126 MBF (about 3.125.000 EUR).
