Belgian Antarctic
research programme
Phase VI
The sixth phase of the Antarctic
research programme (2006-2010) is included in the Programme “Science
for a Sustainable Development (SSD)”. This umbrella
programme groups different research sections: energy, transport,
agro food, health, climate, biodiversity, terrestrial and
marine ecosystems; positioning as such Antarctic research
and the role of Antarctica within the global environmental
system. The major Antarctica research themes remain climate
change and biodiversity. The total research budget for the
Antarctica part amounts to 5 MEURO.

Phase V
The fifth phase of the Antarctic
research (2000-2005) was included in the Second Scientific
Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSD II),
in order to group the programmes Antarctica, North Sea, Biodiversity
and Atmosphere and Climate Change within a coordination structure
entitled "Global Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity".
The total research budget amounted to 6 MEURO.

Phase IV
The fourth Phase of
the Programme (1997-2000) was launched under the Scientific
Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSD
I). The overall budget of the phase amount to 235 MBEF
(about 6 MEURO).
In addition Belgium contributed a sumed of 20 MBEF (about
0.5 MEURO) to the operational costs of the European Project
for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA).

Phase III
The implementation of the third
phase of the Research
Programme on the Antarctic was approved on June 1992, for
a total budget of 126 MBF (about 3.125.000 EUR).
