1. General context
High ozone concentrations during summertime constitute in Belgium and the surrounding countries a threat for public health and vegetation. This concern is shared at various policy levels. To translate internationally prescribed emission thresholds into specific decisions sufficiently detailed for Belgium and the Regions, and for evaluating the impact of such decisions on the ozon concentrations, use is made of computer models. These models represent various atmospheric processes such as meteorological, chemical, transport and dispersion processes.
2. Objective and expected results
The aim of the BelEUROS project is to implement the EUROS model in Belgium. This model has been developed at the RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieuhygiëne - The Netherlands) and it needs to be adapted to the specific requirements for use in Belgium.
These accomodations concern the input data of the model as well as some intrinsic model features. In the end of the project, the EUROS model will be installed at the Interregional Cell for the Environment (IRCEL) and made available to user groups in the three Regions as a tool for evaluating the impact of potential scenarios for emission reductions.
Méthodology
The different steps in the BelEUROS project are the following :
- emission modelling (VITO)
- implementation of the meteorological data (KMI, UCL, VITO)
- adaptation of the EUROS model (VITO, UCL)
- development of the user interface (FPMs, IRCEL, VITO)
- installing EUROS at IRCEL (VITO, IRCEL)
- impact modelling (VITO in collaboration with users)
