The project is aimed at investigating jointly, and using a number of different methodological approaches, the occurrence and stability of gas hydrates in the sediments of Lake Baikal, the presence of areas of possible instabilities and their relationship with gas seeps at the lake floor, the significance of methane seeps as carbon sources for benthic biological communities. Results of this study will be usefull for the fundamental scientific study of gas hydrate stability in the natural environment, and for the assessment of the posssible environmental relevance of the gas hydrates in Lake Baikal.
