Research project C4/10/003 (Research action C4)

Persons :

Description :

The BCCM/LMG bacteria collection contains some 18,000 named strains, representing 1,800 species, subspecies or pathovars:

• Plantpathogenic or plant associated bacteria (Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, Agrobacterium, Rhizobium and allied taxa, Erwinia, Pantoea, coryneforms, etc.)

• Bacteria of medical or veterinary importance (Arcobacter, Campylobacter, Helicobacter, Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Flavobacterium and allied taxa, Alcaligenes, Bordetella, Corynebacterium, Burkholderia, enterococci, streptococci, staphylococci, etc.)

• Bacteria of marine origin (mainly Vibrio)

• Various groups of potential biotechnological interest (N2 fixers, Clostridium, Agrobacterium, streptomycetes, bacilli, lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, etc.)

The following subcollections are part of the BCCM/LMG holdings:

• Lactic acid bacteria: 2,000 strains
• Xanthomonas: 1,500 strains
• Bacillus and allied genera: 1,000 strains
• Pseudomonas: 1,000 strains
• Rhizobiaceae: 800 strains
• Campylobacteraceae: 700 strains
• Acetic acid bacteria: 400 strains
• Flavobacteriaceae: 400 strains
• Aeromonas: 300 strains

Furthermore the following reference panels are available:

• Burkholderia cepacia-complex reference strain panel, a set of strains based on genomovar diversity within this group (International Burkholderia cepacia Working Group)

• Target strains for screening bacteriocin production by lactic acid bacteria (EU-BRIDGE project)

• Panels for quality control of several commercial identification or diagnostic systems

• Test and control strains listed in (inter)national norms and procedures
