Inventory of biodiversity resources in Belgium with particular emphasis on standards and consultation possibilities of the locally kept databases

Research project GT/001 (Research action GT)

Persons :

  • Prof. dr.  RAMMELOO Jan - National Botanic Garden of Belgium ()
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 1/12/1996-31/12/1997

Description :

Creation of an on-line meta-databank on resources and know-how in biodiversity (thus allowing better dissemination of these data, which could be used directly within the framework of the constantly developing meta-databank).

The aim of the project is two-fold. Part one contains an inventory of biodiversity resources available in Belgian institutions, but which is not confined to Belgian territory. The inventory involves specialists and research programmes as well as collections. To make this inventory fully effective, a second part needs to be developed in order to examine database contents. The aim of part two is to draw up an inventory of biodiversity database contents maintained in Belgium. Special emphasis will be placed on an inventory of the technical aspects of these databases. Using this inventory as the basis, a search engine will be developed (tools for transforming databases in order to make it possible to consult them via networks).
