Description :

Electronic data transmission (EDT) is increasingly the focus of attention in the healthcare sector. The question being asked is how telemonitoring and telemedicine can acquire a place in homecare. By way of a homecare pilot project in Belgium’s Limburg province, we are investigating the feasibility of new EDT applications. The project is endeavouring to determine not just technical aspects, but also user expectations of the scheme. The target groups for this project are patients, home carers, home-carer organisations, GPs and technology developers.

The project has the following objectives in mind:
- Development of EDT applications (monitoring of blood pressure, glycaemia and possibly spirometry) and the development of an accompanying technology platform for data transfers. Moreover, provision is being made for the integration of the data generated within the electronic patient care dossier and for the transfer of monitored data to GPs.

- A methodology is being used which guarantees user participation in the design and implementation of the EDT applications. Aspects of technology use are being evaluated. In this case, the users are: home carers, senior carers, home-carer organisations, patients, and GPs.

Based on the evaluation and analysis of this project, recommendations will be produced regarding the introduction and use of the afore-mentioned EDT application in general homecare. For the purpose of project valorisation, a list of criteria is being drawn up which may be used in order to develop an interactive evaluation process during the technology’s development and implementation.
