OSCAR : Concepts of operating systems for composite architectures

Research project IT/IF/012 (Research action IT)

Persons :

  • Prof. dr.  MILGROM Elie - Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain)
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 15/12/1990-31/12/1995

Description :

The OSCAR project is aimed at studying the concepts relating to implementation of distributed systems composed of heterogeneous computers with no shared memory, some of which are conventional single-processors and others parallel machines. The main objective is to determine how to design distributed operating systems so as to make correct use of the total processing power available in such installations for any mixed load comprising programs of which only some may have been the subject of particular processing beforehand (parallelization). The research will mainly concern resources management strategies and the ways in which they can be expressed, sharing and balancing of the load, and the global architecture of a distributed operating system for such installations.
