Research project MO/35/009 (Research action MO)

Persons :

  • Dr.  FUSSEN Didier - Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA)
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 1/1/2002-31/12/2005

Description :

The aim of the project is to measure and gain a better understanding of the population classes of submicron atmospheric particles: stratospheric aerosols, polar stratospheric clouds, and polar mesospheric clouds.

Project objectives:

1.Optimisation of vertical, spectral and optical inversion circuits
a. Improvement of optical inversion by recoupling the UV, visible and IR parts of ACE/MAESTRO
b. Study of optimal spectral and vertical inversion scheme for the aerosol product of GOMOS
c. Definition of a PSC/PMC detection algorithm
d. Investigation of convolution cores and error rate

2.Operational derivation of the parameters of atmospheric particles between the tropopause and mesopause
a. Systematic characterisation of stratospheric aerosols, PSC and PMC by time, altitude and geopositioning
b. Cross comparison of results between the 3 experiments
c. Definition of regular data fields by a method capable of avoiding sensitivity to the satellite trace

3.Atmospheric microphysics
a. Analysis of correlations between ozone, temperature and atmospheric particles
b. Modelling and interpretation of particle movements
c. Study of global circulation patterns derived from particle transport
