Description :

Research to gain a better understanding of the quality and reproducibility of the practical methods used in industry to measure adherence. The results of industrial scratch tests and Rockwell indentation will be compared with those obtained in a new series of quantitative adhesion tests.

Coating layers used in industry with a wide range of properties and adherence will be applied for the purpose. Variable adherence will be obtained by modifying the preparation of the substrate and the structure of the layers.

There will be three parts to the study:

- A better understanding of scratch tests and the preparation of an ENV 1071-3: 1994 "Measurement of adherence by scratch tests" European pre-standard. In the test, the figures for the normal critical force will be taken as the measurement of the adherence of the layer put down.

- Fuller understanding of the Rockwell indentation method. A working pre-standard (ENV) will be developed and submitted to CEN TC184/WG5.

- Expanded practical experience of the new range of tests for measuring adhesion. Guidelines for these tests will be compiled and submitted to CEN TC184/WG5 for publication as an ENV pre-standard.
