Towards an Integration of Education for Sustainable Development: Analysis, Design and Evaluation

Research project OA/04 (Research action OA)

Persons :

Description :

Context

The Sustainable Development is a quite new concept. Indeed, this term appears in French language in 1980 only. The education on sustainable development follows the same way and knows its real growth after the Rio conference in 1992. Since then, if the Environmental Education (EE) has been subject of many searches and publication, the Sustainable Development Education (SDE) is at a less advanced phase. With the integration of the social and economic aspects, the education to the sustainable development with the help of EE amplify his goal and involve, de facto, the multi/inter disciplinarity.

The objective of this form of education is to modify the behaviour and attitudes for a sustainable development. Though strongly settle in human sciences and natural, education to a sustainable development has also a political goal: to permit to the future citizen to lay on decision that concern them. In this context, school can, and must, have a central role. It’s clear that on the sociological plan, the teachers are agents of development; consequently they must be awarded; and have to identify what kind of development they wish for their pupils, they ought to have performing tools to allow them efficient action.

Project description

Objectives

Our objectives are to create a teachers’ training to allow him to integrate pedagogical materials (games, booklet, videotape etc.) concerning Sustainable Development Education into their scholarship practice. As the materials relative to this concept are relatively rare, the stake is to build activities integrating different materials from many sources and thematic (ex: environmental, social and economical issues).

Methodology

Our methodology proposes a schedule divided into 4 major times:

1° Situation analysis concerning Sustainable Development in Belgium through the literature and the educational tools;

2° Design of a teachers’ training including a theoretical draft on Sustainable development, its history, definitions, concepts and implementation in Belgium;
Use of an analysis grid to evaluate the pedagogical material on Sustainable Development Education and collective construction, with the teachers in workshop, of pedagogical activities based on the existing material;

3° Feedback from the teachers, field observations of their practices and evaluation to improve the educational tools;

4° Final writing of a theoretical textbook and of a methodological guide on Sustainable Development Education for the teachers’ use.

Interaction between the different partners

The project lays out in constant interaction with the promoters and our partners, the final users.

Expected products

The expected product is therefore a set of publications (cf point 4 of the schedule) allowing the teacher’s coach, in initial or continued training, to alloy them a tool concerning on Sustainable Development Education.
