Research project PE/ES/02 (Research action PE)

Persons :

Description :

The objective of this research is to establish a strategy for supporting and monitoring in Belgium the development, application, and spread of new medical technologies, in an economically efficient manner. To this end, we use technology assessment methodology adapted to the Belgian context and carried out concretely in the light of decisions made in actual practice on a daily basis.
In the framework of this project, a series of economical aspects of technology assessment are studied in detail and with a view to introducing the technologies into practice. Account is taken of the following items : the problem of integrating collected and processed economic and medical data, economic incentives for a number of technology and provider selection criteria. The methodology is elaborated and applied with the help of a series of recent developments in university hospitals. Permanent collaboration with the departments concerned and an "innovation commission" created in the hospital must help to ensure the practical utility and political relevance of the research.
The research goals is to contribute to economically effective selection, application, and spread of new medical technologies.
