Tropospheric ozone precursors from satellites

Research project PX/8/EO/07 (Research action PX)

Persons :

  • Dr.  MÜLLER Jean-François - Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA)
    Coordinator of the project
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 1/1/2005-31/12/2007

Description :

Our general objective is to quantify the distributions and emissions of the main tropospheric ozone precursors: nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and the non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs). More specifically, we aim to use the inverse modelling technique in order to provide improved emissions of the ozone precursors based on the CO observations obtained from the MOPITT (Terra), SCIAMACHY (Envisat), TES (Aura) and IASI (METOP) instruments, as well as on the tropospheric columns of NO2 and CH2O derived at BISA from UV-visible nadir-sounding instruments: SCIAMACHY (Envisat), OMI (Aura), and GOME2 (METOP).

Satellite(s) or flight opportunity(ies):

- ENVISAT
- METOP
