Stratospheric Aerosol Description from Envisat (SADE)

Research project PX/8/EO/12 (Research action PX)

Persons :

  • Dr.  FUSSEN Didier - Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA)
    Coordinator of the project
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 1/1/2006-31/12/2007

Description :

The GOMOS team at the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy is deeply involved in the GOMOS project since 1995. As an Expert Support Laboratory (ESL) funded by ESA, we have contributed to the development of the operational retrieval algorithm. Also, we participated in the GOMOS Scientific Advisory Group under the authority of ESA/ESTEC and we are presently an active member of the GOMOS Quality Working Group organized by ESA/ESRIN.
The objectives of this project are:

- The GOMOS aerosol products will be integrated in the stratospheric aerosol database of the IASB, together with data from SAGE II/III , POAM III, HALOE, ACE/MAESTRO ..etc. The database and the tools to access are and will remain open.
- A general reprocessing of level 2 data will be performed with averaged transmittance in order to improve the S/N ratio and to detect very minor constituents (i.e. in the mesosphere). The wavelength dependence of the aerosol extinction profiles will be tested against the aerosol model choice.
- Depending on the quality of the optical inversion, the microphysics (nucleation, coagulation and sedimentation) of the aerosols will be interpreted in the assimilation model that is now developed for the interpretation of SAGE aerosol data.
