Single fin condensation: Film local measurements (SAFIR)

Research project PX/8/LP/31 (Research action PX)

Persons :

  • Prof. dr.  KABOV Oleg - Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
    Coordinator of the project
    Financed belgian partner
    Duration: 1/1/2007-31/12/2008

Description :

Films with evaporation and condensation are used in many engineering fields and, particularly, in space applications. Gravity field plays a fundamental role in two-phase flows, and surface tension effects can be isolated and better investigated in a low gravity environment. The SAFIR experiment has been selected by ESA to be designed and developed for a flight onboard the ISS. SAFIR will meet some objectives of several MAP projects of ESA. One of the principal objectives is to improve knowledge of physics of two-phase flows with phase change in microgravity condition in order to provide reliable tools for prediction of these flows.

Satellite(s) or flight opportunity(ies):

- Parabolic-flight campains
- International Space Station or some other long duration platform

Field of research:

Physical Science: Fluid Physics: Heat Transfer and Phase Transition; Fluid Dynamics and Surface Tension
