Description :

The primary objective of the DEMETER mission is to observe potential disturbances of the Earth ionosphere produced by seismic and volcanic activities. Besides the study of these specific short-term events produced by Earthquakes precursors and investigated by the CNES research teams, the RABEM/SEVEM project proposed by the CSR at UCL has a complementary motivation since it considers long-term statistical distributions of particle fluxes and waves intensities. The project main objectives are:

a) to derive statistical electron and proton flux models for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) altitude from the measurements of the IDP (Instrument de Détection de Particules) experiment on board DEMETER (orbit: 710 km, 98 deg. Inclination) and from the NINA instrument on board the Resurs-01 No.4 satellite (orbit: 840 km, 98 deg. Inclination). The models of charged particle fluxes will be derived within the RABEM part of this project.
b) to use the VLF (3 – 30 kHz) and ELF (300 – 3000 Hz) electromagnetic wave measurements performed on board DEMETER to build a global model of the distribution of these waves at LEO altitude (SEVEM project). The ELF-VLF waves are measured by the IMSC (Instrument Magnétomètre Search Coil) and ICE (Instrument Champ Electrique) experiments. Within a previous SEVEM project, a similar model has been developed by using archived observations from the Swedish VIKING mission but at higher altitude above the auroral region.
c) to examine the correlation of precipitation enhancement of Radiation Belt particles measured on board DEMETER and Resurs-01 No. 4 with ULF-ELF-VLF wave intensity variations as well as with changes in the geomagnetic indices and solar wind parameters as indicated in the PRODEX-7 Geomagnetic Cut-off.
