Inter-generations relations: transfers, flows and solidarity networks

Research project SS/D5/05 (Research action SS)

Description :

Three important topics are currently the subject of debate in the industrial world. All the signs are that these will continue to dominate discussion in the years to come. The topics are child-raising, retirement and inheritance. The point of contact between all of them is formed by the transfers that occur between age groups and hence generations.

This study:
- examines the complex mechanism introduced by the State for public and social transfers between age categories. The purpose of most public and social transfers is to redistribute resources between age categories rather than between income groups. This might well increase given the
steady rise in life expectancy and the fact that elderly family members in need cannot simply be abandoned to their fate. What, therefore, will
be left for the 0-15 age category? Will the tie between the State and the individual take over from that between family members?
- seeks to measure as precisely as possible at micro-social level the contribution of families to the building of a new intergenerational solidarity in terms of care, supervision of the very youngest and the elderly, child raising, mutual provision of services between the three generations and all financial transfers.
