Persons :

Description :

This resource centre is based on close cooperation between the School of Criminology at the University of Ghent, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.
The following objectives are at the forefront:
- knowledge of all relevant morphological aspects of the regular police services, other police and detection services, the courts and the management of penal institutions;
- knowledge of the nature, scope and impact of the activities of the administration police, officially recorded by the regular police services and by other police and detection services;
- knowledge of the nature, scope and effects of criminality and victimisation recorded by the regular police services and other police and detection services;
- knowledge of the application of the criminal law at court level and that of the management of penal institutions.
The resource centre seeks to achieve these objectives by:
- developing reliable and valid methodological instruments for collecting data on the fields listed above in a uniform and integrated manner;
- gathering data both from existing sources and collected using newly developed instruments;
- the processing, analysis and presentation of the gathered knowledge and information.
Government institutions are primarily concerned with gathering data, its initial processing and the implementation of integrated judicial statistics. The university pool devotes itself to developing academic instruments and methods and the further analysis and interpretation of the gathered information.
