Study into the sensitivity of female germ cells to irradiation by x-rays, with particular attention to chromosomal aberrations which can lead to congenital anomalies in descendants

Research project ST/12 (Research action ST)

Persons :

Description :

Theme.

Genetic effects of radiation and their mechanisms.

Objectives.

In the absence of adequate human data, experimental studies on animals represent the only means of determining the risk of genetic damage induced by irradiation of the parents. This project consists of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the risk of congenital anomalies in the descendants of female animals irradiated by x-rays.
There will be particular emphasis on the guinea-pig, which is one of the best models for this type of study.
- A significant proportion of the study will be devoted to characterising the sensitivity of guinea-pig germ cells to the inducement by radiation of
translocation and other transmissible chromosomal aberrations that are potentially responsible for congenital anomalies.
- Another aspect of the study will consist of the development of cytogenetic techniques permitting the detection of chromosomal aberrations in the somatic cells of abnormal foetuses from irradiated females. The experimental work will be carried out on both mice and guinea- pigs
The overall study is intended to enhance our understanding of the part played by a variety of radiation-induced chromosomal aberrations in the
etiology of congenital anomalies.
