Remote Sensing and soil moisture assessment for kart collapse prevention (Tournaisis)

Research project T4/DD/27 (Research action T4)

Persons :

Description :

The karst collapse is an important natural hazard for roads, houses, industrial infrastructures and water tables.

More than 150 cover collapse or sinkholes have been listed in the Tournaisis. Those collapses, generally, are cylindrical with 20 metres of diameter and more than 10 metres deep. The occurrence is apparently fortuitous and the indications are non-existent. Generally, the superficial soil hides completely the movements of the ground.

We propose to use remote sensing data (ERS SAR images) to try to prevent the hazard. We want verify if there is a correlation between moisture parameter from images and karst phenomena known as nowadays.
