Advanced Biology Training Course In Antarctica
"Integrative Biology and Adaptation of Antarctic Marine Organisms": selection of participants
January 2008
This National Science Foundation sponsored course
will be held in Antarctica at the United States' McMurdo Station
for one month, starting January 2008. This is an international
course, open to all nationalities. Applications are invited
from graduate students currently enrolled in a PhD program,
postdoctoral fellows, and faculty-level research scientists
who are interested in the study of extreme environments and
the biology of Antarctic organisms. The course will accommodate
up to 20 students. Full scholarships are available for each
student accepted into the course to cover the cost of travel
from home institution to Antarctica, and room and board while
in Antarctica. The emphasis of the Antarctic Biology Course
is on integrative biology, with laboratory- and field-based
projects focused on adaptations in an extreme polar environment.
A diverse teaching faculty will offer students the opportunity
to study a wide range of Antarctic organisms (bacteria, algae,
invertebrates, and fish), as well as studying several different
levels of biological analysis (molecular biology, biomechanics,
physiological ecology, species diversity, and evolution). Deadline
for receipt of completed applications is August 15, 2007. For
more information and on-line applications, please see -- http://antarctica.usc.edu
Brochures available concerning the new Erasmus Mundus programme 'Go North'.
Prof. Annick
Wilmotte has some Brochures available
concerning the new Erasmus Mundus programme 'Go
North'.
12 Arctic Universities have joined to offer courses (master
level) to
international students who can apply for fellowships to support
their
stay. Apparently, there is a total of 101 courses possible.
This can be a nice way for your students to get more familiar
with
the Arctic.
International
workshop on the " Bioregionalisation of the Southern Ocean"
13 to 17 August 2007
An international workshop on the " Bioregionalisation
of the Southern Ocean", organised by the Commission for
the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Ressources (CCAMLR)
will be held from 13 to 17 August 2007 in the premises of the
Federal Environment Ministry, Victor Horta Place, 40, 1060
Brussels.
The objective of this workshop is to establish
a " register " of
Antarctic waters at the biological zoning level as well as
at the level of ecosystem processes in order to prepare the
next step : the identification and the creation of a network
of marine protected areas.
Belgian scientists having biological
or physical data on the Southern Ocean or having published
papers on marine bioregionalisation processes are invited
to contact :
Mr Alexandre de Lichtervelde, CCAMLR Belgian
Representative and member of the workshop Steering Committee
