Introduction

Welcome at the Belgian Polar Platform website from the Belgian Science Policy Office (Belspo) meant to inform scientists, policy makers and the general public about:

- the Belgian history and science in the poles
- laws and treaties regulating polar activities and Belgium’s involvement
- the rules and obligations related to the planning of polar activities
- publications, workshops and events regarding polar activities

The scientific information on this website is completed via the input of the Be-Poles cluster, a Belgian Science Policy project regrouping all Belgian polar scientists in order to better communicate scientific activities and results to the policy makers and the broad public.
The International Polar Foundation (IPF) is coordinating the education and outreach activities within this cluster project.

General info regarding laws and treaties was collected via existing websites from the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, SCAR, COMNAP, CCAMLR, ... and other countries, with the sole idea to learn from existing experience and not to reinvent.

Photographic material is provided by belgian polar actors. All rights are reserved to Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) and the International Polar Foundation (IPF).

Please feel free to send any remarks or comments regarding the site to bepoles@belspo.be.
