Programme presentation Phase V The fifth phase of the Antarctic research programme (2000-2005) was included in the Second Scientific Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSD II), in order to group the programmes Antarctica, North Sea, Biodiversity and Atmosphere and Climate Change within a coordination structure entitled "Global Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity". This structure ensured a better interaction between the various programmes and research themes, in order to permit as much as possible an integrated approach centered on environmental problems within the context of sustainable development. This initiative also allowed to optimise the management of the programmes, promoted co-operation among the different groups of researchers around a central theme, and simplified the use and synthesis of the research results. Given the delicate role of the Antarctic zone with respect to the ozone hole and climate changes as well as its importance as a reference ecosystem, the expertise which has already been acquired on the subject and Belgium's pioneering role with respect to the Antarctic Treaty, special attention was given to studies bearing on this zone. Antarctic research remained visible as such. The overaLl budget of the fifth phase amounted to 6 MEURO. Research was organised within 2 main themes: Climate and atmosphere
Aquatic biodiversity
Cluster
