Return grants for researchers working abroad
In the frame of the promotion of the European Research Area, the Federal Science Policy has launched a programme of return grants. These grants are aimed to promote the reintegration of highly qualified Belgian researchers working since at least 2 years in a foreign country. Eligible candidates must be Belgian nationals OR having spent at least 3 years in Belgium for R&D or higher education purposes, before their post-doctoral stay abroad.
There is no difference between a stay inside the EU and outside the EU, but the stay abroad must be post-doctoral. These mandates are granted for 24 months and on a full-time base. Concerned researchers may propose a research project to be performed in a Belgian research unit, in a research team related a.o. to Interuniversity attraction poles (IAP) or other research programmes financed by the Federal Authority.

Postdoc fellowships to non-EU researchers
The stimulation of international mobility and the attraction of researchers from abroad is one of the priorities of the European Research Area.
In this context and intending to stimulate the S&T cooperation, the Federal Science Policy Office does implement a fellowship scheme for highly qualified researchers (i.e. postdoctoral level or equivalent experience) from specific regions, granting them an oppotunity to work a certain period in a Belgian research team. From the selection 2011 and for 4 years, these fellowships are co-funded by the Marie Curie Actions from the 7th Frame Programme of the European Commission.
From 2011 the targeted countries are those with wich the Belgian Reseach Institutions have strengthend the cooperation and for which not sufficient alternatives are available. However are not considered the countries member of the EU, those associated to the 7th PC (Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Moldova) nor the following countries : Qatar, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, USA, Australia, Canada, Kuwait, Taiwan, Japan, Bahamas, South Korea, New Zealand, Bahrain, Oman, Seychelles, Barbados, Saudi Arabia. The potential Belgian host units are those which are involved in the research programmes and actions of the Federal Science Policy Office.
The duration of the stay is 6 to 18 months. Applications are sent to the Federal Science Policy Office by the Belgian project leaders.
The selection takes place once a year.
