Museums for Art and History
The Cinquantenaire
Museum is divided into four major collections:
- The collection of national archaeology - from prehistory to the Merovingian period (751 A.D.)
- The halls devoted to antiquity (Near East, Egypt, Greece, Rome), with the model of Rome which shows how the city looked in the 4th century A.D.
- The section of non-European civilisations focuses on Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia), America (pre-Colombian civilisations and current traditional societies), Oceania (notably with splendid objects coming from Easter Island) and the Islamic world
- The European decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the 20th century: sculptures, furniture, tapestries, textiles, costumes, lace, ceramics, metals, glassware, old vehicles, photographic and cinematographic equipment, etc.
A space called "Museum for the Blind" allows those who cannot see to discover art objects by touch.
Like any self-respecting museum, the Royal Museums for Art and History regularly organise temporary exhibitions which notably illustrate lost civilisations or those of today.
