NATURAL SPACE RESOURCES : a current reflection for the next generations

Mankind is preparing its return to the Moon. Which challenges, which opportunities, which future await us up there? Is the Moon a simple step towards Mars, asteroids, or even beyond? The use and the exploitation of celestial bodies’ natural resources are already addressed from a programmatic and legal point of view. And it will be further addressed in an economic and political perspective. At the request of Belgium, the United Nations Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space has added to its agenda an item on the definition and the establishment of an international framework dedicated to the equitable, safe and sustainable exploration, use and exploitation of celestial bodies’ natural resources. And you can contribute to this reflection.

BELSPO and the Luxembourg Space Agency are co-hosting, in Luxembourg, on March 26, 2024, an international expert meeting in the framework of the working group of the Legal Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS on Space Resources.

The purpose of the meeting is to collect inputs to the international conference on the same topic, which will take place in Vienna, on April 15, 2024. The conference is meant to provide the working group with material to be further processed.

If you are interested in contributing to this reflection, you are kindly invited to send us, before March 19, 2024, your reflections, suggestions and ideas in the form of a PDF document, indicating your name, forename, email address and, if applicable, the organization you are representing (*).
Contributions are to be sent in French, Dutch or English. Contributions sent after March 18, 2024, may be considered for the purpose of further intergovernmental discussion, but cannot be taken into account for the Luxembourg expert meeting.

You can send your document to the following email address : jean-francois.mayence@belspo.be.

We kindly invite you to visit the dedicated webpage of the United Nations Office for Space Affairs (UNOOSA) .
