Description :

A final phase is needed to complete and capitalize on the actions carried out by the 'Métis Resolution' project led by the State Archives, which began in 2019. This final phase includes the following actions:

1. Complete and ensure the continuity of the work carried out so far, both in terms of assistance in researching the origins of mixed-heritage individuals and their descendants, and in terms of research conducted for the writing of a detailed historical study on the role of civil and ecclesiastical authorities in the treatment of mixed-heritage people during the colonial period in the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi.
2. Present the results of the historical study to the House of Representatives at the 2026 parliamentary session and communicate the findings as widely as possible (in particular to associations representing colonial métis in Belgium, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi). The government should also be able to rely on the research team to assist in decision-making and in responding to the numerous questions that will arise from this presentation of results, providing the necessary clarifications and ensuring the widest possible communication of the results to the various target audiences (metis and their descendants, Belgian and foreign researchers, members of the African diaspora, teachers, etc.).
3. Ensure the transfer of expertise so that the research and investment carried out under the "Métis Resolution" are not lost. This includes, among other actions:
- drafting a concise and popularized publication of the historical study, designed to allow quicker and easier reading of the main conclusions. This summary, accessible to a wide audience, could also be used by teachers in raising awareness of societal issues and colonial history.
- drafting an archival guide related to records concerning the Métis, to permanently establish knowledge in the field, empower the Métis in their research, and facilitate knowledge transfer to the archivists of the State Archives.
- presentation of the research team's final results during a communication and awareness day aimed at a wide audience (Métis and their descendants, Belgian and foreign researchers, teachers and students, etc.) in collaboration with FPS Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, and Belgian Scientific Policy.
