Jan Cobbaert (Heverlee/Louvain 1909-Kessel-Lo/Louvain 1995)
Sun on the beach is part of the works of the first period of Jan Cobbaert, during which he devoted himself to the pictorial lyrical abstract language.  The attentive observer will nevertheless distinguish in the vertical lines the masts of the sailboats, a recurring motif in his work. The artist opts for a firm and pronounced contour line, filled with brightly coloured surfaces. In his youth, Cobbaert was in fact trained in the art of stained glass. The impact of this formation is reflected in the aesthetics and decorative character of this composition. In a way, here also, the sun and  the light give life to the stained glass.
