Based in the centre of Brussels and housed in a majestic Art Nouveau building created by the architect Victor Horta (1906), The Belgian Comic Strip Center was opened by King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola on 3 October 1989. Dedicated to comic strips, the museum showcases the heritage and current creations in this artistic discipline commonly called the Ninth Art. It is a collection of everything related to European comics, from their prestigious beginnings to the latest developments.
Celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year, its temporary and permanent exhibitions have already welcomed nearly five million visitors. They help to make the museum a living, dynamic and attractive venue, promoting the talents of yesterday and today, without cultural or geographical limit. But the Belgian Comic Strip Center is primarily a major museum; its conservation work, its educational and creative support initiatives, its documentation centre and its library make it a reference tool in the world of comics.
A cultural ambassador, the Belgian Comic Strip Center is a unique association project supported by the public authorities but its financial resources come primarily from its visitors and its own activities. After thirty years, its objectives are still to conserve and promote comic strips... as well as to safeguard and highlight a remarkable architectural heritage, two jewels of Belgian culture!
