HOLANT project

Antarctica phase VI (2006-2010)

HOLANT - Holocene climate variability and ecosystem change in coastal East and Maritime Antarctica

Content

HOLANT is a multi-disciplinary project which is aimed at a better understanding of long- and short-term climatic events in different coastal regions in Maritime and East Antarctica. HOLANT will help documenting the history of environmental changes at the south pole in relation to other regions and its role in global climate during the past 10000 years.

Objectives

  • the reconstruction of changes in temperature and the moisture balance of lakes in Antarctic coastal areas during the past 10000 years,
  • the reconstruction of changes in the relative sea level of the regions, which is a function of the local continental ice thickness and global sea level and
  • reconstruction of changes in the relative sea level of the regions, which is a function of the regional-scale response of biota and their diversity on climate change
