Belgian Science
Policy employs 2,700 staff who are responsible for the daily
task of managing, coordinating and valorising scientific research:
from stem cells to space exploration; from air quality to archaeological
digs on Easter Island; from African cultures to sustainable development;
and from restoring Belgium’s historic heritage to monitoring
the ecosystem of the North Sea. In short, from the infinitely
small to the infinitely large.
Science Policy provides the interface between the research world
in Belgium and partner countries and institutions. For example,
it manages and finances Belgian involvement in the European Space
Agency (ESA) and has supported the missions by Belgium’s
two astronauts, Dirk Frimout and Frank De Winne.

Finally, Science Policy is also developing ‘Belnet’: a high-speed
connection network providing internet access for academic circles and administrations.
Belgian Science Policy also has a budget worth 450 million euro, which it assigns
to research programmes that are implemented by our universities and major Belgian
scientific institutions and spread across four research hubs: documentation,
art, nature, and space.
