Phases II and III - Concerted Research Actions (1977-1993)

"Project Sea" was followed by two series of Concerted Research Actions (CRA) in marine sciences.

From 1977 to 1981, the Concerted Research Action “Oceanology” with a budget of 3,4 MEURO and from 1982 to 1993, the Concerted Interuniversity Research Action "North Sea" with a budget of 5,3 MEURO. These research actions which, unlike “Project Sea", had no central coordination system, promoted sustained research in a number of laboratories and facilitated the expansion and improvement of results already achieved.

The projects of the Concerted Research Action “Oceanology” action are:

Hydrodynamics; Physical oceanography and meteorology; Data treatment (J. Nihoul - Université de Liège (ULg))
[Final Report]
Marine ecotoxicology; Chemical oceanography; Instrumental oceanography (A. Distèche - Université de Liège (ULg))
[Final Report]
Chemical oceanology; Instrumental oceanology (I. Elskens - Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB))
[Final Report]
Biotic elements in the marine ecosystem and in the marine system dynamics: Phytoplankton activity; Zooplankton activity; Bacterioplankton activity; Participation in the calibration of the model parts dealing with above studies (Ph. Polk - Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB))
[Final Report]
Benthos and its relations in marine system dynamics: Benthic dynamics and production; Coastal zone; Scheldt area; Participation in the calibration of the model parts dealing with above studies (L. De Coninck - Universiteit Gent (UGent))
[Final Report]
In vitro study of the transfer coefficients between trophical levels of the food chain in view of their exploitation in mariculture: In vitro study of energy transfer; Uptake of hydrodynamic, chemical and biological parameters in fishery models (G. Persoone - Universiteit Gent (UGent)
[Final Report]
Exogenic contributions into the marine ecosystem; Interactions between the water column, sediments, and the waters in between (R. Wollast - Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB))
[Final Report]

The projects of the Concerted Interuniversity Research Action "North Sea" are:

Benthos in marine ecosystems and environmental pollution – Marine ecosystems; Pollution of Belgian coast waters and the estuary of the western part of the Scheldt (M. Coomans & C. Heip - Universiteit Gent (UGent))
Ecohydrodynamic study of oceanic fronts – Modelling of oceanic fronts; Physical, chemical and biological measurements; Production comparisons; Ecohydrodynamical front modelling; Evaluation of front influences; Comparative hydrodynamic studies concerning various marine types (A. Distèche, J. Godeaux, J. Nihoul - Université de Liège (ULg))
Ecology and geochemistry of marine systems – Ecological functions; Biotransfers of stable pollutants; Geochemistry of heavy metal traces (I. Elskens & Ph. Polk - Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB))
Marine geology – Sediment dynamics and morphodynamics; Seismic stratigraphy; Tithostratigraphy (G. De Moor, J.-P. Henriet, P. Jacobs & Marechal - Universiteit Gent (UGent))
Microbiological study of basic processes which govern the circulation of organic matter in the marine and estuarine environments (G. Billen - Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB))
[Final Report]
Chemistry of the North Sea – Biogeochemical cycles of heavy metals in the North Sea; Atmospheric pollution by heavy metals above the North Sea and the evaluation of air-sea interaction processes; Material flux from the Scheldt estuary to the North Sea; Material input and transport through discharges, exploitation of sand and dredging (R. Van Grieken - Universiteit Antwerpen (UA))
[Final Report]
Study of the lobster Artemia with regard to the improvement of its use in the foodchain as a source of food in aquaculture (P. Sorgeloos - Universiteit Gent (UGent))
[Final Report]
