The prenormative programme "Scientific support for prenormative research in the food sector within a context of sustainable development" will offer evaluation tools allowing policy guidelines to be defined in the fields of quality of life (consumer protection) and optimum utilization of resources (protection of the environment).
In order to develop tools allowing the food sector to be adapted to this concern to preserve the environment (whilst ensuring that product quality is maintained), this prenormative programme is split up into two complementary sections and aims to :
Section 1
- make the data collected by industries, public research institutes, etc., more accessible (creation of databanks) and to guarantee their quality;
Section 2
- encourage research on product standards in the food sector within a context of sustainable development with a view to strengthening the expertise of research centres;
- establish environmental criteria for the elaboration of product standards fixing limits for levels of pollutants or nuisances not to be exceeded in composition or emissions, at each stage in the production process.
The description hereafter relates to section 1 only.
Section 1:
Review of the standardization of products in the food sector within a context of sustainable development in Belgium and abroad
The results of the selected projects should contribute towards :
- drawing up an inventory of activities relating to the preparation of standards concerning levels of pollutants or nuisances not to be exceeded in the composition or emission of food sector products; inventory of the monitoring instruments developed in this way in Belgian industry and public research centres;
- on the basis of this inventory, reconstituting food production systems and thus helping to integrate the results; identifying the areas of the food production chain where standardization efforts should be made within a context of sustainable development;
- conducting a review of European and international initiatives;
- developing a (reliable) databank accessible to all;
- examining the actions undertaken at Belgian and international level in the field of product standards in the food sector within a context of sustainable development;
- defining Belgium's contribution at international level (and particularly European level).
