| Description nl | Brusselse Stedenbouw heeft tot op heden minimale aandacht voor de kwaliteit van de openbare geluidsomgeving. Bij de ontwikkeling van het spoorweggebied van L28 wordt geluid besproken in termen van lawaai- en trillingshinder. Vanuit het perspectief van de projectontwikkelaars en autoriteiten moeten de gezondheid en de rust van de toekomstige openbare ruimte worden gegarandeerd. Conflicten over sociale geluidshinder worden preventief en repressief aangepakt, op straatniveau. Een exploratieve bevraging bij geluidskunstenaars en betrokken jongeren en sociale professionals, opent het debat voor creatieve perspectieven op geluid en stedelijke ontwikkeling. In overeenstemming met Steve Goodman’s theorie over sonische oorlogsvoering (2009), onderzoekt dit Ph.D. project een herziening van de positie en rol van geluid in de ontwikkeling van stedelijke openbare ruimte. Een stedelijk gebied in transitie benaderen als een nexus van sonische en vibrationele mogelijkheden, motiveert een herziening van de rol en positie van geluid en trillingen in het ontwerp van de openbare spoorwegruimte in transitie. Voortbouwend op het werk van avant- garde kunstenaars, stedelijke (geluids-) onderzoekers en ontwerpers, ontwikkelt het Ph.D. onderzoeksproject een ontwerp- en performatief perspectief voor auditieve and vibrationele interacties in de spoorwegruimte van de L28- lijn, als tussenstap naar een kritische sonische benadering van stedelijke transitie.

| Description en | To date, Brussels Urbanism is insufficiently concerned about the quality of its public sonic environment. Within the context of public space development along the railway line, urban sound is dominantly discussed with a negative connotation. From the perspective of the project developers and authorities the health and peace of the future public space should be guaranteed. Conflicts over social noise nuisance are dealt with preventively and repressively in the short term, at street level. However, exploring the sonic struggles from the perspectives of involved young people and social professionals and sound artists, opens up the debate towards creative sonic approaches. In line with Steve Goodman’s theory on sonic warfare (2009), the Ph.D. research project will address the need for a (re)vision of the position and role of sound in public space development in a context of urban transition. Understanding an urban area in transition as a nexus of sonic and vibrational possibilities, encourages a review of the role and position of sound and vibration in the design of transitory processes for public railway park/places along the line L28, Brussels. Building on the work of avant- garde artists, urban (sound) researchers and designers, the Ph.D. Research Project develops a design and performative perspective on auditory and vibrational interactions of the transforming L28- railway area, as a step towards a critical sonic approach to urban transition.
