Research Programmes
The department “Research Programme” is responsible for implementing and monitoring long-term research programmes whose framework of reference is international decision-making and agreements as well as governmental and ministerial statements.
- For more than 30 years, Belgium has actively participated in the European aeronautical development programmes. A highly technological market characterized by considerable non-recurring fixed costs, a very slow return on investment and therefore a high commercial risk.
- BRAIN-be allows, through the funding of research projects to meet the needs for scientific knowledge of the Belgian federal departments and to support the scientific potential of the FSIs.
- The BELSPO DIGIT-04 programme (2019-2024) aims to support the digitization of the huge Belgium heritage patrimony, which resides in the federal museums, libraries, research institutes and archives.
- Given that drug abuse is a serious public health issue in society this programme seeks to offer an answer to the most pressing problems around drug use and drug addiction. This programme argues for sustained prevention.
- The FED-tWIN programme provides long-term support for joint research activities between the Federal Scientific Institutions (FSI) and the Belgian universities through joint research profiles implemented by post-doctoral researchers.
- In addition to the long-term research programmes, BELSPO also funds a number of priority impulse research initiatives in support of federal policy.
- The P4Science Programme aims to promote the research capacity, knowledge acquisition and scientific services of the FSIs.
The S4Policy Programme aims to provide various tools to support decision-making by the Federal Government and FPSs based on scientific knowledge. There are three types of research: ‘Flash’, ‘policy-driven’ and ‘policy-oriented’.
- The aim of this programme, implemented by BELSPO in collaboration with the FPS Public Health, is to build scientific knowledge on the social consequences of the COVID crisis in order to draw the necessary lessons for the federal government.
