EWI is organising this international marine and maritime research conference in tandem with the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). The other partners on board are the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, the European Science Foundation - Marine Board and the European Commission (DG Research). EurOcean 2010 is the seventh conference in a series of successful EurOcean / MAST Days conferences.

The EurOCEAN 2010 conference has the aim of contributing to future marine and maritime research in Europe in the coming decade. By defining research priorities, the conference will make a valuable contribution to the research policy and in particular support the Marine strategy framework directive. The conference finishes with the presentation of the Ostend Declaration, an overview of concrete action points aimed at policy-makers.

The Flemish government department for Economics, Science and Innovation (EWI) organises this international marine and maritime research conference together with the Flemish Institute for the Sea (VLIZ). The Federal Government Department for Science Policy, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, European Science Foundation - Marine Board and the European Commission (DG Research) are the other partners involved. EurOCEAN 2010 is the seventh conference in a series of successful EurOCEAN / MAST Days conferences.

The conference has the aim of making a valuable contribution to the scientific foundation of the European Strategic Plan for marine and maritime research and providing an attractive programme. An overview of the achievements and most important lessons from recent years is given in the opening session. The second session of the conference looks at the big challenges and opportunities for the next decade and aims to clearly list the research priorities. The third session includes important components that are decisive for the expansion of the European research field for marine sciences.

Finally, the conference in Ostend will be closed with the presentation of the Ostend Declaration. This will formulate concrete action points for the policy-makers. A similar “conference declaration”, intended for the European Commission, was drawn up for the first time at EurOCEAN 2004. Priorities in the marine sciences were listed in the declaration and given a place in the sixth and seventh framework programme. The Ostend Declaration will target the member states and associated states very strongly, as their support is needed for further development in the European field of research for marine sciences.
